1. I will learn how to Delegate and do more of it.
As a business owner, your to-do list probably wouldn’t fit on a single page so this is where delegation comes into play and is the key to a healthy work-life balance. Sometimes, people don’t delegate because it takes a lot of upfront effort and we all know nobody else can do it as well as you – yeah, right. But, do ensure that your employees are sufficiently trained, to the point where they can take over at least, some of your tasks. The next step is to clearly communicate the objectives and deadlines, so that you don’t end up micromanaging.
2. I will learn how to manage my Cashflow more effectively.
Cash is king and is the lifeblood of all small business. A study from the financial services company U.S. Bank found that 82% of startups and small businesses fail due to poor cash flow management. It’s not a great surprise, is it?
3. I will take steps to improve my Digital presence.
If your website hasn’t been recently updated, or you’re not engaging with the social platforms where your customer go then you need to get on it! If digital isn’t part of your marketing strategy at all, it’s time to add this to your new year’s resolutions – quickly.
4. I will embrace Digital Transformation.
Digital transformation is the process of using digital technologies to create new or modify existing business processes, culture, and customer experiences to meet changing business and market requirements. This reimagining of business in the digital age is digital transformation. Move manual processes from paper to automated systems to provide a better customer experience.
5. I will Charge what I’m worth.
Do you feel that your product or service is undervalued “Your target market will pay what the marketplace has proved it will pay”, says Entrepreneur. How can you implement this? Depending on your business, you can shift to a “packaged” approach. This is where you provide tiered packages that give potential customers choices, so they can focus on the value you offer rather than the amount of time you spent. Look at the pain points you relieve and your pricing can then reflect this value.
6. I will Learn something new.
New year, new skill. Choose something new to learn in 2026 – it may be directly related to your business or completely unrelated. Learning a new skill will add a dimension of interest to your life that will help to maintain that work-life balance. As one example Skillnet Ireland has a great range of training and course options. Your local LEO or EI office may be able to provide access to subsidised programs.
7. I will make business Strategising a weekly event.
Running a small business can be chaotic and it’s easy to get sucked into the day-to-day operations. Business strategising allows you to take a step back and highlight what worked and what didn’t, while adjusting old goals and setting new ones. Don’t just do this at year end but do set aside time at month end when you can see what’s working and what might need some changes.
8. I will Drop what’s not working and move on.
Maybe your sales process isn’t working, one of your products isn’t selling or a specific partnership isn’t working out… If this is the case, it’s time to drop it. As The Balance states, “If a technique or a product or a business relationship isn’t working for you, stop using it. Don’t invest a lot of energy into trying to make the unworkable workable. Move on. Something better will turn up.”
9. I will Promote my business regularly and consistently.
You should definitely focus on delivering an amazing business customer experience, but also spread the word to the outside world. LinkedIn is the main B2B social platform; have you a good presence there; regular relevant and engaging customer posts, comments etc.? To attract new customers, you have to make networking and promotion a priority. Take the time to create a marketing plan or, if your funds allow it, hire a marketing or business expert to help you set it up.
